Illinois Central College “Between the Lines” Program Recalls Historical Events of Chicago 1968

Join Illinois Central College’s “Between the Lines” program will revisit a particularly tumultuous year in American history with a presentation titled, “Chicago ’68,” on Mon., Oct. 1 from 2:30 to 3:30 pm in Room 212C/D on the East Peoria Campus. Stan Mendenhall, Larry Henikoff, and Jim Sullivan will offer a presentation and lead the discussion.
The whole world was watching the events of 1968 in Chicago. In April, at the news of the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr., African American neighborhoods in Chicago rebelled. In June, Robert Kennedy was murdered. In August, the Democratic Party held its National Convention in Chicago, and the Yippies arrived as well to protest the party’s endorsement of the Vietnam War; the police riot shook the nation. A panel of speakers will discuss the historical context, recount personal memories of these events, and discuss literary responses to these events by such writers as Gwendolyn Brooks, Normal Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, and Garry Willis.
“Between the Lines” is a lecture series presented by the faculty members of the English, Humanities and Language Studies Department at ICC. The goal of the series is to offer literary presentations that will interest students and people in the community, as well as promote reading literacy and scholarly study.
